Kühn Malvezzi / Michael S. Riedel MOMENTARY MONUMENTS "The exhibition is accompanied by an exhibition” (Michael S. Riedel)

This installation by Michael S. Riedel and Kühn Malvezzi in Aedes West is a reflection on the ensemble of eleven projects by Kühn Malvezzi which will be on view in an exhibition that will run concurrently in the Landesmuseum Berlinische Galerie.

Both exhibitions comprise a unity and bear the joint title MOMENTARY MONUMENTS. The spatial installation in Aedes West deals with common aspects of artistic and architectonic practices in a confrontation with issues of presentation and representation. "Only seldom can an architectural project be exhibited as a work.

Image and text are possible modes of approach to presenting architecture indirectly. Deployed with precision, image and text combine to constitute a model that is itself capable of becoming a real situation.” (Kühn Malvezzi)

Such an attempt has been undertaken by the architects Kühn Malvezzi in their exhibition in the Berlinische Galerie. Through the intervention of artist Michael S. Riedel, an extension of this process of reproduction and its conditions has been produced for Aedes West, an additional and exemplary situation which thematizes both the relationship between exhibition and catalog and the process of production itself. The physically accessible and usable installation in Aedes West represents a transformation and contentual extension and utilizes the Aedes catalog by Kühn Malvezzi for the production of an unequal double. As in his earlier works, artist Michael S. Riedel refers consciously to preexisting material, responding with his installation to the projects of Kühn Malvezzi.

Catalog: An Aedes exhibition catalog will appear, as well as a limited edition that thematizes the conditions of catalog production, all the way from planning to conception to marketing.
