Appearing Sculptural

Visitors might still recall the directorial force of their first monographic exhibition at Aedes in 2009: With an almost religious museality and little explanation, the brothers Bernhard and Stefan Marte installed their massive, sculptural, concrete models in the exhibition spaces at Pfefferberg, allowing the works to speak for themselves.
Similarly contemplative yet suspenseful, Marte.Marte’s second appearance at Aedes will now offer a glimpse into their current confrontations with art and cultural buildings. Just a few kilometers away from Aedes, the architects from Vorarlberg, Austria are working on the exhibition, documentation, and information center for the “Federal Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation”. In addition to this highly publicized conversion of the historic Deutschlandhaus, located near the former Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin-Kreuzberg, they will present their plans for “Galerie Niederösterreich”, a new museum to be built on the “Art Mile” of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Krems (A), as well as the new exhibition center in Dornbirn (A), whose statically demanding wooden support structure represents the innovative wood building tradition in Vorarlberg. The second part of the exhibition takes a dynamic, cinematic approach to Marte.Marte’s past works, such as their award-winning mountain hut in Laterns and their distinctive bridge trilogy in Dornbirn. In this audiovisual series created in collaboration with photographer and experimental filmmaker Andreas Waldschütz, Marte.Marte’s most sculptural works are unconventionally and sensually re-staged.
Brothers Bernhard (*1966) and Stefan Marte (*1967) studied architecture at the Technical University in Innsbruck. In 1993, they co-founded Marte.Marte Architekten in Weiler, a small municipality in the Voralberg province of the Rhine Valley. In addition to numerous private buildings, Marte.Marte have also completed an impressive number of prize-winning constructions in the fields of culture, education, infrastructure, and health. Their buildings are characterized by a stringent sense of abstraction, reduction, and an unerring understanding of the respective location. Countless competition successes and international awards testify to the merit of this young studio, which currently has a staff of 25 employees.
