On Independence Day, the 4th of July 2008, the new American Embassy will be inaugurated at its former location directly adjacent to the famous Brandenburger Tor. In the framework of three exhibitions entitled „Insight USA“, Aedes uses the historical occasion to take a comprehensive look at contemporary american architecture developement.

A Shaping the Future: CityScapes / LandScapes / WaterScapes

When we think of American architecture we think of the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright, Robert Venturi, Richard Meier oder Peter Eisenman. Little known is the scene of the young contemporary building artists in the USA. The exhibition presents five young practices from various regions of the US. Plans, models and photographs illustrate their projects, highlighting current trends from the architectural scene in the US. Selected buildings by: Johnston MarkLee / Los Angeles, Johnsen Schmaling Architects / Milwaukee, Miro Rivera Architects / Texas, Della Valle Bernheimer Architects / Brooklyn NY, and Christoff:Finio Architects / New York City. A contemporary, exciting group of architects has successfully established itself in the course of the past 10 years. International both in staff and scope of work, they serve a clientele that explicitly searches for something “special” and – failed by the conventional market – wants to see its particular wishes fulfilled. Each of the projects on display – from pedestrian bridges to new office buildings or restoring residential – they seeks and finds its own images and topics, that discover the particular into the usual. To witness the expert handling forms and materials, analogies and references to the landscape and urban context in the work of these young practices is stimulating. It also makes a significant contribution toward a sustainable building culture, not only in economic and ecological terms, but also with regard to design.
