On Independence Day, the 4th of July 2008, the new American Embassy will be inaugurated at its former location directly adjacent to the famous Brandenburger Tor. In the framework of three exhibitions entitled „Insight USA“, Aedes uses the historical occasion to take a comprehensive look at contemporary american architecture developement.

InSight USA – The New Embassy in Berlin

The initial occasion for this exhibition is the opening of the new embassy building designed by Moore Ruble Yudell and Gruen Associates at its historical location at “Pariser Platz” in Berlin. Finished some ten years after its successful entry into a national design competition in 1995, the new edifice completes the now fully restored Pariser Platz and represents American culture and diplomacy in the urban setting of Berlin. The correlation between historical context and security concerns alongside functional and representative issues were part of the numerous challenges in the making of this building. Apart from imparting public information on its architecture, art, and landscaping, the Berlin Embassy exhibition features the architects, designers, and artists in their collaboration with historians and policy makers.

For safety reasons, the building will not be accessible to the public. Aedes, however, enables an inside view into the house. The exhibition presents the development process, design and appearance of the new building, featuring models and original drawings for the U.S. Embassy along with photos and videos of the interior architecture and art works of eminent American artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Sol Lewitt, landscape architect Laurie Olin, and graphic designer Deborah Sussman. For Moore Ruble Yudell, winners of the American Institute of Architects’ National Firm Award 2006, the Embassy highlights over 25 years of international activities in architecture and planning. Recent examples complement the show of the practice’s work.
