The exhibition "Curtain Rise!" presents the six out of thirty winning projects, that had been submitted within the summer competition initiated from www.plattformnachwuchsarchitekten.de. For the second time, the theme of the competition based on the German contribution for the 10. International Architecture Exhibition Biennale in Venice, entitled "Convertible City - Formen der Verdichtung und Entgrenzung", as a kind of satellite in Berlin. The contest asked for ideas around the current process of demolition of the “Palace of the Republic”, that should show a sense of humour, some critical aspects in relationship to the importance of this historic place and the creative potential for the future of the city.

The jury selected the most interesting works under the chair of the General Commissioner of the Biennale Almut Ernst, Grüntuch Ernst Architects. Other members of the jury were Martin Rein-Cano, Topotek 1, Anna Hopp, wiewiorra hopp architects und Matthias Böttger, Raumtaktik. A press release can be received from: [email protected]. Besides the results of the competition, parts of the exhibition „palace of the republic – private memories and public discussion“, that resulted from the Project Palastarchiv (www.palastarchiv.de) are shown . The debate about the future of the „Palace of the Republic“ and the „Berlin Palace“ was one of the most intense controversies in architecture in the latest German history. The exhibition shows pros and contras of advocators and antagonist of the palace. The actors of the discussion and their points of view are the theme of this exhibition. The project was compiled by historians from the Humboldt-Universität, Berlin in cooperation with the Landesarchiv Berlin, Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag, Humboldt-Universitätsgesellschaft as well as Museumsverbund Pankow and Wall AG.
