The ’20 under 45: The Next Generation’ exhibition presents works of 20 young and emerging Singapore architects under the age of 45. From homes, to hotels, shopping malls and offices in Singapore, Asia and around the world, these works reflect the bold and vibrant style of Singapore architecture that is constantly redefining the experience of urban spaces and elevating the enjoyment of everyday lives.

Award-winning & wide-ranging

The featured works are diverse and wide-ranging, from the stunning Dubai Mall in Dubai, vibrant Noon Square in Seoul, the award-winning Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali, Indonesia, to the uber cool Quincy boutique hotel in Singapore. Some of these works have won Singapore awards and international acclaim, like the 2009 Urban Land Institute Award for Excellence in the Asia-Pacific region (Newton Suites by Chan Ee Mun; WOHA), the 2010 World Architecture Festival award for the holiday category (Alila Villas, Uluwatu by Richard Hassell; WOHA) and the 2009 MIPIM Awards for hospitality category- Finalist (Quincy Hotel by Ong Tze Boon; Ong & Ong),

Many of the works proactively address pertinent architectural challenges of the environment, demands of new lifestyles and the need for space efficiencies, to produce authentic and groundbreaking solutions. This generation of Singapore architects shows a penchant for clean geometrical abstractions, seeking elegant simplicity and complexity of experience. There is an assured confidence in the modern idiom as a basis for crafting buildings and spaces in the tropical setting. In the Singapore architects’ quest to continuously create beauty in familiar objects and spectacle in the new, the goal is also to seize the imagination of the moment and show its relevance to the human destiny.

Selection of works

The architects were selected, based on their dossier of works, by a panel of assessors drawn from the Singapore architectural profession, the professional board, the real estate industry and institutions of higher learning. More than a collection of excellent buildings, the selection of the architects is based on their overall achievement in architectural design, ideas and leadership. This exhibition is a second installment of the successful inaugural event held in Singapore in 2004.

Urban Redevelopment Authority

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is Singapore’s national land use planning and conservation agency. URA’s mission is “to make Singapore a great city to live, work and play in”. We strive to create a vibrant and sustainable city of distinction by planning and facilitating Singapore’s physical development in partnership with the community.

The URA has successfully transformed Singapore into one of the most liveable cities in Asia through judicious land use planning and good urban design, in partnership with both public sector partners and the private sector. URA adopts a long term and comprehensive planning approach in formulating strategic plans such as the Concept Plan and the Master Plan, to guide the physical development of Singapore in a sustainable manner. Its plans and policies focus on achieving a balance between economic growth and a quality living environment. As the conservation authority, URA has an internationally recognised conservation programme, having successfully conserved not only single buildings, but entire districts.

To turn its plans and visions into reality, URA takes on a multi faceted role. In addition to its planning function, URA is the main government land sales agent. Through sale of state land, it attracts and channels private capital investment to develop sites to meet our land use needs. URA is also the development agency for Marina Bay, the new city extension. To create an exciting cityscape, URA actively promotes architecture and urban design excellence.

A.UDE

URA's Architecture & Urban Design Excellence (A•UDE) programme was set up to promote good design in our built environment. The programme seeks to raise public awareness of good architecture and urban design and encourage a more vibrant and design-conscious community. We do this through a variety of initiatives and outreach programmes for both the general public and industry professionals. These include exhibitions, talks, seminars, workshops and design competitions.
