EMBT Miralles Tagliabue Architects, Barcelona

The Catalan Architecture office EMBT Miralles-Tagliabue is internationally known for the newly opened and highly acclaimed New Scottish Parliament building in Edinburrow, Scotland.

The first exhibition in Aedes of their work now focuses on recent projects leaded by Benedetta Tagliabue, who continued the office's work after the death of her partner Enric Miralles in 2000.

Based on their common conceptual ideas she developed her own distinct architectural expression, as seen in the five projects presented at Aedes. Two of them are published for the very first time. The Hafencity Hamburg project (2002-) links the city center of Hamburg, Germany with the waterside by creating a changing landscape at human scale that partially moves with the floods. The public is fluently guided from the new housing blocks down to the water.

Intermediate levels and piazza like platforms make the new public space an enjoyable experience for everybody. The nearly finished high-rise building with 20 stores for the New Headquarters of Gas Natural (1999-2005) in Barcelona, Spain resembles a giant rock in a landscape. Despite its height the building strongly relates to its ground and surroundings.

The Santa Catarina Market (1996-2005) in the centre of Barcelona is a multi-functional urban project that impressively merges and confronts the activities of the market with those of the city. With its significant and colourful design the Santa Catarina Market is already a landmark in Barcelona.

The subway and train station Centro Direzionale (2005-) in Naples, Italy creates a new relationship between the natural volcanic ground of the city and the artificial surface of the site's area designed by Kenzo Tange in the 1970's.

The flexible, playful and inspiring architecture of the Vicky Sherpa Foundation Primary School in Kathmandu, Nepal (2005-) is motivated by ist founder's philosophy. The Vicky Sherpa Foundation endeavours to offer children of the lowest class in Nepalese society - the so-called "untouchables" - exceptional places for education and living.

The exhibition is a vivid and informative mix of sketches, drawings, big scale photo-collages, photos, models and films.

Project management Aedes: Isolde Nagel.
