MADA s.p.a.m., Shanghai in Barcelona

MADA s.p.a.m. (s.p.a.m.=strategy, planning, architecture, media) is located in Shanghai, and was founded 1999 by Ma Qingyun. Todays staff counts 45 plus employees. MADA On Site is an exposee of China’s urbanism today through MADA’s collection of work over the past 4 years. Architecture, to MADA s.p.a.m., is a polemical act engaging a large range of realities and ideals. By shifting and altering the ‘realities’ of the built environment, we re-adjust ideals, aspirations, and possibilities. In China, the speed of change and the scale of operation dissolves all boundaries between planning, architecture, landscape and media. It is under these circumstances where MADA explores a third frontier where the bastard of their love affairs or debris of their wars are celebrated.

MADA On Site will exhibit MADA’s work on a backdrop of construction blueprints from real projects in China, all spun and sped by political, technological and economic forces. It puts sketch models next to working drawings, 3-D renderings next to on-site video, analytical diagrams next to vernacular materials. Projects range from private house to Central Business District of a city, from historic preservation program to urban renewal strategy. MADA evolves from these intercourses and through them, MADA On Site probes new responses to China’s built environment of today.

The exhibition will present the following projects: CBD Snake, Wuxi; Courtyard House, Beijing; Double Wall, Xian; Father’s House, Xian; Freeway Park, Qingpu; Lilong House, Shanghai; Made-in-Utopia, Yiwu; Market in the Air, Xian; MOB, Beijing; North Bund, Shanghai; Thumb Island, Qingpu; Troparadise, Hainan; Urban Steroids, Shanghai; Y-town, Ningbo.
