Otto Steidle ist einer der renommiertesten und vielseitigsten Architekten in Deutschland, der mit Bauten für Wohnen und Arbeiten seit Jahrzehnten immer wieder neue Wege aufgezeigt hat. Steidle schaftt Stadt- und Wohnräume, in denen sich Individualität und Freiräume entwickeln können. Seine Architektur liefert Angebote zur individuellen, "demokratischen" Besetzung von Räumen. Diese Offenheit spiegelt sich auch in der spontanen und skizzenhaften Art des Zeichnens und Entwerfens.
Im Laufe der Jahre verlagerte sich Steidles Interesse zunehmend von Einzelbauten auf den Zusammenhang mit dem städtischen Kontext. "Nicht das Haus bestimmt die Stadt, sondern die Stadt bestimmt das Haus", entsprechend diesem Leitsatz zielt Steidle auf städtische Bauformen, die aus dem urbanen Zusammenhang entwickelt werden. Die alte städtische Struktur wurde von ihm aber nicht als abgeschlossenes Element, sondern als offenes System behandelt, das neue und zukünftige städtische, räumliche oder funktionale Entwicklungen aufnehmen kann. Die Übertragung urbaner Elemente, wie Wege, Höfe und Plätze, auf Wohnanlagen, gemischte Bebauung oder auf eine ganze Universitätsstadt, ermöglicht sowohl die städtebauliche Einbindung als auch die Öffnung von Baugruppen. Steidles Bauten verbinden und sind doch stets neu definiert. Dabei bewahrt er immer seine eigene Handschrift und verfällt nie in anbiedernde Gefälligkeit vor dem Ortstypischen.
Während die Architektur zunehmend eine globale Tendenz zu Hightech und Glas, zu technoider Entmaterialisierung zeigt, sind die Bauten Steidles von Volumen und Material bestimmt. Sie lösen sich nicht auf, simulieren nicht Transparenz, sondern bilden Räume, die Alt und Neu, Öffentlich und Privat umgreifen und doch nicht festlegen. Dieses "unfertige" und gleichzeitig integrative Element ist vielleicht Steidles wichtigster Beitrag zur Erneuerung von Stadt und Haus. Hinter seinen manchmal fast konventionell wirkenden Fassaden verbirgt sich eine enorme Nutzungsvielfalt und die Räume lassen Platz für undefinierte Zwischenzonen, deren Qualität für ihn am besten "den Zusammenhang von Ästhetik und Demokratie" ausdrückt.

Die Ausstellung zeigt unter anderem aktuelle Arbeiten aus München, Bremerhaven und Peking anhand von Skizzen, Modellen und Plänen sowie Film- und Fotomaterial.
Aus der Fülle seines Glücks und seines Schaffens musste Otto Steidle am 28. Februar 2004 plötzlich diese Welt verlassen.

Otto Steidle is one of the most well-known and versatile german architects, whose residential and office projects have consistently forged new directions in architecture over the past decades. Steidle creates city spaces and living spaces, which allow for the development of individuality and freedom. His architecture is one which offers an individual "democratic” occupation of spaces. This openness is also reflected in the spontaneous and sketch-like manner of his drawings and designs.
Over the years, Steidle’s interest has increasingly shifted from an emphasis on the single building towards the correspondence of structures within its urban context. As expressed in his guiding principle "not the building determines the city, but rather the city determines the building,” Steidle consequently seeks urban forms which develop out of their specific circumstances. He views the old urban structure not as a completed whole, but rather as an open system, which can still incorporate future urban, spatial or functional development. The transfer of urban elements, such as pathways, courtyards and plazas within residential areas, mixed use areas or campus settings, makes possible the urban reference as well as the opening up of formerly closed building structures. Steidle’s structures retain their contextual relationship, while simultaneously introducing new definitions. In this manner his signature remains recognizable and does not succumb to courteously reproducing typical local elements.
While global architecture increasingly displays a tendency towards high-tech and glass, as well as towards technological dematerialization, Steidle’s structures are determined by volume and material. They do not desintegrate, nor do they simulate transparency, but rather they create spaces: spaces which incorporate the old and new, the public and private, but which are not ultimately determined. This "unfinished” and yet simultaneously integrating element is perhaps Steidle’s most important contribution towards the renewal of cities and buildings. Behind his occasionally conventional-seeming facades lie an enormous functional diversity, the spaces of which allow for undefined inbetween zones, whose quality is best expressed as the "correspondence between aesthetics and democracy”.
The exhibition is presenting Steidle´s recent work in Munic, Bremerhaven and Beijing by means of scetches, models, plans, film- and photomaterial.
In the midst of his happiness and his creativity Otto Steidle suddenly left this world on February 28th 2004.
